4 years agoWe did the dolphin kayaking tour in Byron Bay. This was amazing! We saw turtles along the way and then when we got out at sea we saw a group of dolphins all swimming the wave, this really made the experience for us! The crew were really good and made sure everyone was okay, the only annoying thing would be the waiting around for everyone to get out to see in the kayaks this can take quite a while and feels like it takes time off your experience!
5 years agoTour was good value. All materials provided were of good quality. The instructors were helpful and friendly. The experience is great as you get to see Byron Bay and its native wildlife from the water. The views the tour provide are excellent and the guides are knowledgeable about the wildlife and the town making the trip very informative. The good aspect of this tour is that they are eco-conscious and don't harass the animals they encounter. The pick up is a nice bonus as some hostels are quite removed from the beach location. Overall I had a great time with this very sporty and fun activity.
7 years agoAbsolutely first class. Highly organised and excellent equipment. Incredibly friendly, funny and Knowledgable and passionate tour leaders who know the area and have a passion for the wildlife and local area. Couldn't recommend highly enough we had a brilliant time celebrating our 12th wedding anniversary on the water with the Dolphins. Thanks again!
7 years agoBeing a Canadian who has grown up canoeing and kayaking in the great lakes, I certainly had a different view of how this tour would unfold. Sea kayaking is very different from kayaking in a river or lake. When I arrived at the meeting place and started to get geared up I couldn’t figure out why I needed to wear a helmet. The answer presented itself shortly after entering the water. Getting past the breaking waves is no easy task, and the helmets are to protect you from a stray paddle (or kayak partner) while you attempt to do so. If you’re looking for a leisurely experience from start to finish, this is not the tour for you. If however, you would like to experience a bit of adventure mixed in with a bit of leisurely paddling and enjoying some stunning views, then I would highly recommend this tour. Conquering the breaking waves was a lot of fun. The salty taste in your mouth and the realization that you forgot to bring water wasn’t quite so fun. I would bring some water with you if you can. I’d also bring sunglasses that you don’t care too much about because many people lost them in the waves. Even more fun than battling the waves was surfing them back in on our return. Many kayaks flipped, but it was all in good fun. For those who are intrigued, but a bit concerned about the waves, don’t be. Dolphin Dougy and his crew were always there to help us through. They have the tour down to a science, and the ending of our tour was the perfect showcase of how far ahead they are of the competition. Another company had gone out at the same time as our tour, and their return to the beach ended with 7 kayaks scattered amongst the waves and a dozen tourists scattered in between. It did, however, make for some entertainment while we enjoyed a nice beverage and a snack! Unfortunately, we were not successful in spotting any wildlife, but Dolphin Dougy stayed true to his promise and invited us back free of charge. I would highly recommend this tour.
1 decade agoI went on the sea kayak tour in Byron Bay with my boyfriend and friend from Canada and we had a blast! While it was not completely what we expected, it was one exciting adventure! We, perhaps naively, thought we would be leisurely kayaking and sighting wildlife. However, getting out to sea and back to shore was more like a white water rafting experience! Being thrill seekers, the three of us loved it! Our guide, Dolphin Dougy, gave us the directions to paddle strongly and keep the kayak straight when fighting the waves. While I tried my best to paddle quickly and with strength, I was no match for the water. Every time a wave hit, I flew from the front to be back to the kayak, until our kayak finally flipped over. In all fairness, we were unlucky with the timing of the ways; many kayaks in our group did make it out without flipping. However, to be safe, do not bring your camera or anything else you do not want to lose!
